A Cold and Snowy Day in Slovenia
Posted in Blog on 25. Jan, 2010
Last Thursday, we embarked on a journey to Postojna that proved to be a twofold challenge. Firstly, it was our first ever gig abroad – Slovenia IS abroad now and has been for the last 20 years, although everyone was very polite trying to speak Croatian – and secondly, the snow was such a nuisance that, driving there, we were already thinking about the horrors that await us on our way back to Zagreb.
Just as we crossed the border, the scenery was completely changed. We entered, as Trebor noticed, a world so dark, so Mordor-like, that we kind of started considering turning back to Zagreb. But we didn’t. We were a bit late for the sound check, though, and got there just in time to unload our gear, meet the personnel of the newly opened Rock Cafe, and have a coffee in a nearby bar because, well, who serves coffee in a rock café?
We were to play as the second band in what was a competition of three: Uroš Planinc Group, Bwase Nwage, and us, Superbrands. Uroš Planinc Group got up on the stage first.
While listening to the orgy of Uroš’s guitar solos, we had our hands and mouth full of juicy vegetarian pizza and some delicious cookies, compliments of our friends Ivana and Rok.
After a few slices of pizza and a pint of beer, it was our turn to burn down the disco. We started with the hard rhythms of The Hand Strikes Hard, followed by Into My Life, and, forty minutes later, ended with Come (To Hyde Park). The sound was pretty good and very loud, so Rockline’s Aleš Podbrežnik dragged us to an adjacent room to have a quiet interview with us, which is why we missed the larger part of the performance of Bwase Nwage, later to be announced as the winners of the evening.
So, what to make of this trip to Postojna? It was a pleasant, although cold evening, and a new and valuable experience for the band. We had a good time, met some new people, saw some new bands playing, had a few pints of Postojna’s beer. You can see it for yourself or – if you can read Slovenian – read about it here.
And last but not least, we had the chance to promote our partners in crime – Clowder Crafts – by distributing some specimens of their new project, the crocheted Boho Media Case designed especially for the occasion.
Shame we didn’t manage to see the Postojna Cave and its well-known inhabitant, Proteus Anguinus, aka the Human Fish. Next time, maybe.
